  • Yes, it is already that time of six weeks– your Creative Writing requirements are due!

First up are Literary Reviews, due Tuesday, September 20th. We all should know what to do at this point in the game– if not, consult the copy of one of Abigail’s previous lit reviews to understand what is expected of you.

Second, Submissions and Readings, due Wednesday, September 21st. A list of three submissions formatted like the example in your CW Handbook (again, one of Abigail’s, I believe) and a proof of reading, most of the time the program with the author or event organizer’s signature, handed in to Heather. Molly’s mother was kind enough to compile a list of online magazines she recommends submitting to:

    Newport Review
    Dark Sky Magazine
    Up the Staircase
    Camroc Press Review
    Wigleaf
    Eclectica
    Word Riot
    Prick of the Spindle
    Juked
    Noo Journal
    Used Furniture Review
    Vox Poetica
    Staccato
    Bartleby Snopes
    The Toronto Quarterly
    Everyday Genius
    Necessary Fiction
    Gargoyle (Print)
    Rumble
    Camera Obscura
    fwriction review
    blue five notebook
    Litsnack
    Monkeybicycle
    Boundoff (audio)
    Barrelhouse
    Annelemma

If you haven’t subscribed to CWRWOPPS, do it now, and here is a list of submitting opportunities that do not require reading fees from its daily notices:

Third, revisions, due no later than Thursday, September 22nd, at 3:10. Revisions will only be accepted if it follows the CW work template and is stapled on top of the original draft. If you plan on turning it in before Heather returns, please give it to Ms. Yu, the substitute, and do not leave it on Heather’s desk or mailbox.

Fourth and final, Art&Film, due Friday, September 23rd, which, coincidentally, is the last day you can complete your requirement– by watching M at the Randall Museum that night. Credit will only be given if you’ve watched two films, so if you haven’t watched at least one…

Department requirements are a major part of your grade, so please don’t slack off and think they’re nothing. Take it seriously and turn everything in on time– those who continuously fail to to do so will be put on probation in Creative Writing.

To end this on a happy note:

    Have fun!

    Love,Heather

  • Many thanks to those who came today! Creative Writing was one of the first of the departments to set up our station– we all arrived before 10 to bring out the tables, Ümaluts, and the Poetry Wall. Many passersby contributed and bought Ümlauts– we made $110 dollars in profit. We gave everyone that buys an Ümlaut a piece of cake for free. Kudos to Avi, who not only baked it (yellow, like CW), but also made the lemon frosting and the “CW!” in chocolate (we made a dollar off the “C” alone).

Everybody did an awesome job presenting our department to prospective parents and students. The amazing Avi and Molly ran around from person to person, selling Ümlauts.

Yes, even the giant sun from Tech. No exceptions.

Nick (and possibly other people) came up with a brilliant idea to attract customers: Human statues.

“YOU. Should buy an Ümlaut.” –Jules

We began the Poetry Wall with little prompts that people added to and expanded on, and soon, all three sides were filled with poems and a couple of interesting sketches…

Special mention to CDubs Giorgia and Abigail, who organized the Poetry Wall and the Ümlaut sells. All in all, it was quite a successful day!

  • For all interested in submitting work:

The editors of Conte, an online journal of narrative writing founded in 2005, announce an open submissions call for poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction for our sixteenth issue, slated for publication in Winter 2011-2012. Recent contributors include Norman Dubie, Erika Meitner, Bruce Weigl, Robert Wrigley, Jim Daniels, E. Ethelbert Miller, William Hathaway, and Roger Weingarten, among others.

Visit www.conteonline.net for specific submission guidelines and past issues. We accept simultaneous submissions through Submishmash, and strive to respond within three months. We look forward to reading your work!

  • 7:00 pm this Friday at the Randall Museum is the French film The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, based on a Jean-Dominique Bauby memoir of the same name, directed by Julian Schnabel. It won awards at the Cannes Film Festival, the Golden Globes, the BAFTAs and the César Awards as well as four Academy Award nominations.

Refreshments at 6:30, Film begins at 7:00.

This is the SECOND TO LAST Art & Film available before this grading period ends, so if you have yet to watch any movies, this and M (9/23) are your last chances! Art&Film requirements are due September 23 – watch your calendars.

  • Yesterday was the famed Field Day, a day where the students and teachers of SOTA gather at the field for a rowdy and festive school-wide competition. Everyone was decked out in their departments’ colors and screaming from the bleachers as their representatives fought on the field, gunning for the treasured trophy.

We C-dubs (yellow and proud), who took that first place trophy last year, didn’t place this time around, but we managed to still have a blast. A highlight was the dance competition: our own Aly and Jules surprised us all when they stripped down and whipped out their yellow paint, dousing themselves and the track around them- they had to clean up afterwards, but it was definitely worth it.

  • Yes, Field Day is coming, and CW has a reputation to protect, so yes, train, train, train! But take heed that Wednesday is not JUST Field Day!

First, Sept. 14 will NOT BE LATE START. School begins at 8:00 am and will follow the activity schedule for the rest of the day. Don’t show up at 9!

Second, Sept. 14 is the last day to turn in your proof of Tdap. If you are of the few people Mr. Pacini called out today, please turn in a form from your doctors, stating you have gotten the vaccination, or else you will not be able to go to class on Thursday (and yes, that is a bad thing).

Last but certainly not least, Field Day. Wear yellow, feel yellow. CDUB SPIRIT!
